Moving the ReportServer database

I want to move the ReportServer database .mdf and .ldf files from the default directory to another drive (E:)

The ReportServer service is started, but when I run a sp_help_db from SQL Server management studio the ReportServer database is not listed. When I tried to detach it using sp_detach_db , the command reported succes but I'm wondering how this worked when the database is not in the sysdatabases table.

I haven't tried moving the ReportServerTempdb but I imagine that this would be ok, because this is in sysdatabases.

I can't seem to find anything in BOL about moving just the ReportServer database itself , anyone else come across this?

Thanks!

sp_helpdb will only return databases you have access to, so that may be part of it...also won't return databases that are offline and some other things, so not sure if that might be what you are seeing....

As for moving the database files, the RS catalog DB and RSTempDB's are just like any other user database, you can move the data files wherever you like, so long as SQL Server can see them. Note that the ReportServer service does not necessarily have to be running in order to see/move/modify/etc. the RS databases in SQL Server. The ReportServer service is simply a consumer of the SQL Server services to provide data storage in the RS and RSTempDB databases, that's all.

HTH,

|||

Thanks.

I'm using the sa login, so I would expect to be able to see it. There is nothing in sys.master_files for the ReportServer database and it does not show up in the list of databases in the management studio.

I haven't actually configured Reporting Services yet, only installed it. Is it possible that the database is not listed or attached until reporting services is up and running?

Cheers

Moving the ASPNETDB.MDF file to another computer

Hi all!

I have some problems with asp.net windows authentication.
Asp made the file ASPNETDB.MDF. But I dont have SQL Server on the machine where the application will be deployed...
So I have to move this file to another server, but I couldnt find any information about ASPNETDB.MDF connection string or somenthing like this.
Is it possible to move this file or I have to make the authentication on my own, with my own database? I hope there is a solution to this problem!
Many thanks! Regards!

Certainly there isSmile The connection string can be found somewhere, check this article:

Moving SQL 2000 to different Drive

Hello All,
Please help. I have installed my SQL on an old powervault and needed to move
it to a new CX300. The mdf files are installed on F:\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\Data and the ldf files on G:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data
drive. I stopped all SQL services and copied data to new H and I drives, then
shutdown F and G drives. I renamed H and I to F and G and reboot. My problem
is that after the sever rebooted the SQL services won't start. I got an
error: the system cannot find the path specified. Any idea?
Thanks.
Put everything back to where you had it. Then read about sp_detach/
sp_attach in BOL.

Moving production server to new box

I'm moving my prod server to a new box. Is the plan below
workable ?
I install the new server at the same SP level as the old
server.
I copy the mdf and ldf files to the new location.
I over write the mdf and ldf files for master with the old
servers copy.
I restart the server.
Since the directory structure is different, I assume that
master will come up but other db's will be suspect.
I update sysdatbases to point to the correct path for the
user databases.
I restart the server.
Is this too simplistic 'Please read this article, and do not move or overwrite MDF/LDF files with

moving mdf files

hi all,
could someone help me out on this question? i have a database made up of 3
.mdf files. the files are all on the same drive of a raid 10 so we need to
move them to different drives, as it is obvious that we are not taking
advantage of the hardware. how do i move the mdf files? what is the best
possible way since the db is relativly big and the time frame we have to
make this movement is small?
thanks in advance.
hector quintanillai am sorry for answering my own post, but i didn't see this part while
reading BoL:
If the database you are moving has additional data or log files, specify all
of them in a comma-delimited list in the sp_attach_db stored procedure. The
sp_detach_db procedure does not change no matter how many files the database
contains because it does not list them.
thanks and sorry!

Nothing to be sorry about!
If it's ok to take the database offline during the move, then using
sp_detach_db etc is an ok approach. There's a limit of 16 files with that
approach, but you're no-where near that.
There are also other options to do this online if needed, although they may
be slower & it sounds like you're probably ok with going offline anway.

If the database is not a VLDBMS (ie huge) you may be able to simply create a
new file on the target volume / drive, start a transaction & take the steps
to move the object/s from the old file over there. This may even be as
simple as begin transaction, rename existing objects (tables, stored procs
etc), create new object/s (tables, stored proc on old file) on new file,
select into, index maintenance, drop old table, commit transaction. Then if
all objects are off the old file successfully, drop the file & delete it
from the file system.
If you have many tables, it may be worth investing time in building DTS
packages that perform the work in parallel. Basically, if you don't have an
online need, it's usually not worth going through all this as there's
analysis, planning & preparation that isn't worth it if you don't really
need to do it online.
I was mainly pointing out that there are online options which may be worth
looking into but only if you know you need to. sp_detach_db is certainly
going to be an offline operation.
I don't have a specific urls unfortunately, although I'm hoping someone else
who read the thread may know of one.. Perhaps post a new thread in case
others ignore this now it's been responded to.

Moving mdf & ldf files to another server

I am running SQL Server 7 (SP4) on Windows 2000 Server
(SP3). I am trying to implement a DR solution for my SQL 7
servers. I have a tool (Legato's Replistor) that will
replicate the Data directory to my DR server which has the
same version of SQL running. I have replaced the entire
Data directory with that from the other server. Can I get
these databases loaded doing this?
When I tried starting SQL it started OK but my main DB was
in suspect mode. I tried to detach and attach the database
but I got a corrupt log file message (9003).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Canpar TransportBrian,
You don't want anything accessingthe sql files while it is running. Andeven
if you did get the files to copy to another server they would not be
consistant and could not be trusted. You might want to look into Log
Shipping instead.
