moving sql to a new server
way to export the following to the new server:
1. Linked server configurations
2. Replication configuration
I read the Microsoft document called "HOW TO: Move Databases Between
Computers That Are Running SQL Server" but it does not discuss replication
information and linked servers. Right now the server is a publisher and I
have another box for the distributor and multiple boxes for subscribers. I'de
like to do the least amount of change on the replication and hope that there
is a way to restore the publisher databases on the new server (which has a
different name) and still have replication working.

Moving SQL DBs from machine to another with the same name
been answered recently...
our sql db machine is too old. we bought a new server with which to replace
it. the trick is, we want to keep the name of the machine and db instance
the same.
obviously, we don't plan on having two machine with the same name on the
network at the same time. how do we handle this?
my first thought is to name the new machine with a new name (mach2),
transfer over all the db's, take the old one (mach1) off of the network.
rename the machine/instance to the old one (mach1).
if i do this, can i drop the original instance on the new machine
(mach2)-->register the new (mach1)? will my data be there?
Thanks so much for any relplies!!!Go Browns! (go@.browns.com) writes:

This KB article gives some good advice

You have have to use sp_dropserver and sp_addserver to get the name
of the server to be correct. Check SELECT @.@.servername, to see that it
has the right name.

Moving SQL 2000 to different Drive
Please help. I have installed my SQL on an old powervault and needed to move
it to a new CX300. The mdf files are installed on F:\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\Data and the ldf files on G:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data
drive. I stopped all SQL services and copied data to new H and I drives, then
shutdown F and G drives. I renamed H and I to F and G and reboot. My problem
is that after the sever rebooted the SQL services won't start. I got an
error: the system cannot find the path specified. Any idea?
Thanks.
Put everything back to where you had it. Then read about sp_detach/
sp_attach in BOL.

Moving RS 2005 Reports to new server
Hi Guru,
Currently, we are running our RS 2005 reports on our old hardware and wanted to move them to better server where I’ll be building it tomorrow. On the existing server, we installed both database and reporting services running on the same box but I’m ONLY planning to install reporting service on the new server.
What are the options to move RDL, shared data sources, shared schedules, jobs to the new server? I heard people talked about backing up and restore both ReportServer and ReportServerTempdb databases to the new server would do it. How can I restore or attach these two dbs to new server when we don’t plan to install database services on it?
Please help!
Thanks,
Silaphet,
You probably have to deploy your reports again using Visual Studio.|||YOu can do a backup and restore on the new server of the Report Server database. You will additionally have to backup the encryption key from the old server using the configuration utility and apply / restore it on the new one as the content of the database is encrypted and cannot be decrypted without the key of the old server.HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Thanks,
Silaphet,If you are moving only RS and plan on the databases used by RS for its
metadata/object caching to stay where it is then you definitely are not
going to want to touch the databases. When you mention the RDL, shared
datasource, etc etc. These are all in the database. There are no files. You
only need the application to be moved and then pointed to the database. RDL
only exists on the development. When you deploy they are compiled and stored
in the database.
If you have enterprise then you should just treat this like a web farm and
install the new one and have both using the same databases and then remove
the old one once done. Otherwise you need to remove the old one and then
install the new. When you install the new you point it to the databases.
Standard edition does not support web farm (multiple RS all using the same
databases), only enterprise.
Here is a link that deals with totally moving RS (the app and the supporting
databases) which might help you understand the pieces but isn't quite what
you are doing:

Moving physical disks with database inside?
I have an old Datawarehouse server with 8 disks
in these disks I have a Raid 5 setup for my datawarehouse based on 4 disks.
I want to move these 4 drives to a new server (better processors).
My 2 servers are Dell based with Win 2003 ent. edition + SQL server 2000
ent. edition.
Can I do the move?
What I have to double check before?
Thanks.
Jerome.
Hello Jerome,
Each manufacturer has his own way of writing into the RAID drives, ie, IBM
servers RAID5 drives cannot be moved
into a HP server ... etc. Infact, the manufacturer himself might comeout
with newer and efficient ways of writing into the
diskdrives (Happened to us once with the HP servers). Lot depends on the
RAID controller cards that you r using in
the two servers.
Check with the vendor of the servers andf find out if the Old RAID drives
are upward compatible with the new machine with
the New controlller cards.
From my experience once when the Hardware recognises these drives, OS shud
have no problem in recognizing them
as well

Moving my SQL 7.0 databases to a new server to replace the old server
My existing SQL server is an old box that can no longer cope with the load. I need to replace it with a brand new box.
I am looking for a comprehensive set of steps that I could follow to ensure that the transition to the new server goes well.
I'm looking to transfer all my user databases but I'm not so sure whether I have to backup and restore my system databases to the new server as well.
I want to name the new server the same as the old server since I will be taking the old server out of production but I'm not sure whether I should rename the server AFTER I move over all the database and how that would affect SQL. Or should I first rename the old server, remove it out of the domain, then name my new server with the same name as my old server, and then proceed with the SQL installation and the moving of the databases.
Also, I do have a maintenance plan, DTS packages and some jobs set up on my old server that I would also like to move to the new server.
Is there a web page that explains all the steps in granular detail ?
SQL Server 2005 Books Online actually has pretty good info on this. I just did a search on "upgrade 7.0" and it provided a good roadmap.
