Moving SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005 - Need suggestions onsyncronization of data betw
Our current production database server is SQL Server 2000 and it is
running on Windows 2000 server.
Now as part of the upgrade we bouht a new machine and installed
Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2005 on it.
Now our idea is to move the databases from the current production to
the new SQL Server 2005. 1).How do we do that? Is it just do a
restore
of the most recent back up of a particular database on the new new
SQL
Server 2005?
2).Also we are thinking to syncronize the data between the current
production server and the new SQL Server 2005. So that at one point
it
thins are ok then we could point the web app to the new SQL Server
2005 which is currently pointing to the current production SQL
Server .
In other words how do make transition from the current SQL Server
2000
to our new SQL Server 2005?
Can any body suggest me a starting point on this on how do we do
this?
Your help is hihly appreciated.
Thanks,
-L

Hi,
Thank you for the high level suggestions and all the links that you
uys have provided. I will to go through one after the other I guess I
shold be fine with these links.
Kelly - I just wanted a quick start on this issue so I posted in two
different locations of SQL Server. I am sorry for any inconvenience.
By the way I din't know that we could post in one location and have it
appeared in multiple related groups. How do we do that?
Ben - The link you provided should help me with a proper planing to
implement the upgrade process.
Thank You,

Yup a lot of people don't realize it so that is why I posted the message. If
you are using OE just click on the NewsGroups Icon at the top of the message
and you can choose additional groups. Then replies go to all at once.

HI Kelly,
Thanks for taking time to help me out here but I can't find

HI Kelly,
Thanks for taking time to help me out here but I can't find
NewsGroups icon at the top of the any of our messages or on the top of
the message. What are you reffering to when you said if I am using OE?
Thanks,
-L|||OE stands for Outlook Express. If you are using another newsreader or the
web I don't know what it looks like. In OE the top of the page looks similar
to this:
News Server: [SQL Server News
]
(icon) Newsgroups: [
]
(icon) Cc:
[
]
Subject:
[
]
But the bottom line is that you can add more or different newsgroups to the
Newsgroups section seperated by a comma to post to all of them at once.
(icon) Newsgroups: [ microsoft.public.sqlserver.server,
microsoft.public.sqlserver.programming ]
Hope that helps,

Moving SQL 7.0 to New Hardware
I've read some articles on the web but none seem to fit my
situation.
We have an application upgrade and at the same time need
to move our SQL 7.0 to new hardware.
The new server will have Windows 2000 and SQL 7.0
installed and then we will upgrade to SQL 2000 at some
point during our application upgrade.
What is the best method of moving our SQL 7.0 databases to
our new hardware?
Thanks in advance. You can either use BACKUP and RESTORE, or sp_detach_db and sp_attach_db.
Make sure you sync users after transferring databases.

Moving servers
server machine, so that I can upgrade the existing servers
to a new spec and have failover clustering.
I plan to copy all the database to the new server using
the copy wizard, this will copy all the SP etc from the
origal server to the new server, but how can you copy 200+
dts packages to this new server without going into each
package and saving it to the new locationHow about this

So, if you are going to transfer your DBs from old 2K to a
new 2K Server, you can just make backup/restore operation.
Make sure you transfer MSDB database for the DTS packages.
You also can have a problem with system logins.
Take a look at this article about this issue:

Moving objects from 1 SQL Server to another
I hope some here can help me.
We are currently running SQL Server 2000 on 2 different servers. The first server was an upgrade from SQL 7 so the data, etc are in a directory named MSSQL7. The second sever is newer and larger (Disk and Memeory) and was a straight install, so the data is in MSSQL.
I am trying to move everything from the old server to the new one. The databases are easy as well as the users. I can not get my DTS packages, DB Maintenance, and SQL Server Agent jobs from the old one to the new one.
Any ideas?? We are running out of room on the old server and need to get this moved over asap.
I look forward to hearing from someone.
RayFor the SQL Server Agent jobs (and DB Maintenance as well, as they are all created as Jobs I believe) you can right click in the Enterprise Managers Management/Jobs Tree and select All Tasks/Generate SQL Script
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. The only Item that gives me that option is the SQL Server Agent Jobs. But I get an error when trying to run the script because the DB Maintenance Job does not exist.
For the DTS Packages, I am trying to save them as Structured Storage files or Visual Basic files. But I have not figured out how to read them back in

Moving msdb and model database to a standby machine
We are planning to do a hardware upgrade for our SQL 2000 STD edition.
I have to activate my standby database.
I am only restoring the standby for my Production database (tg)
But now I need to copy model, msdb DB also to get the jobs.
Can I drop and create the DB from Production using restore methods.
Please let me know.

"But now I need to copy model..." WHY? model is empty database, template for
new database...
you can restore msdb if you use same version (and sp) and collation on
standby server
1. stop sql agent
2. restore msdb
3. start agent and check agent error log...

Moving Logins from 6.5 to 2000
The method to transfer the logins with the password from SQL Server 6.5 to SQL Server 2000 is
to upgrade the databases using "upgrade wizard". There is no documented way to move logins with password using scripts.
But there is undocumented method method to do this. see the below link. I have never tried this.
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.security/browse_thread/thread/2eaa09c3d7d7bd1e/099a55c7fbed5496?q=copy+sql+6.5+logins+to+sql+2000&rnum=10#099a55c7fbed5496
FOR SQL 7 and SQL 2000 servers you can read the below article to transfer logins.
